Respect can be regarded as the act of admiring and acknowledging a specific quality or characteristic of someone or something.
The importance of respect has been emphasized by philosophers for centuries and it is also an important concept in most religions. Some argue that it is the foundation of living a quality life.
From the definition above two types of respect can be identified – 1. Respect of admiring someone or something and 2. Respect of acknowledging something.
- Respect of admiring someone or something.
This type of respect is rooted in the individual’s subjective norms and standards. In other words, it is based on the individual’s opinion of what qualities or characteristics can be respected. It is in this sense that respect can be earned.
What is revered, admired or honored is personal and a reflection of the individual’s own subjective principles – it shows what is important to the individual to the extent that it is respected.
This type of respect can be reflected in compliments or in some form of recognition towards the significance of the qualities or characteristics of someone or something.
This type of respect is characterized by the following elements:
- It requires some form of judgement.
- It is an admirable quality or characteristic.
- It reflects gratitude.
- It motivates what is admired to persist.
Respect in this context can be regarded as a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something evoked by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.
- Respect of acknowledging something.
This type of respect is not something that needs to be earned, but rather a moral obligation that individuals have towards one another as well as towards objects in their environment. It can be seen as a fundamental principle of ethical behavior. It is the recognition or acknowledgement of the uniqueness of someone or something. It is to allow the inherent qualities and characteristics (the true nature) of someone or something to be expressed. It is to allow them to be what they authentically are – even if you do not agree with it.
This kind of respect is characterized by the following elements:
- There is no judgement.
- It can be regarded as a virtue.
- It reflects a person of integrity or a person of high moral standing.
- It validates and appreciates the unique nature of individuals and objects.
Respect in this context can be regarded as an acknowledgement of the uniqueness of each individual and object.
All forms of respect originate from self-respect.
Self-Respect is to recognize your own worth and value. This includes taking care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
“Respect yourself and others will respect you.”
This requires a fair amount of self-knowledge.
